About Us

Barnsley Chess Club is a friendly club with around 20 members.

We have players of varying strengths.
These abilities range from strong league players to average club players and lower graded players.

Most of our members play chess just for the love of the game.
Some members strife for better chess whilst many take part in the social club events.

The chess club meets at Locke Park Working Mens Club, 189 Park Rd, Barnsley, S70 1QW every Tuesday at 7.30pm.

We welcome new members

You are warmly invited to attend our club. You don't need to be a budding grandmaster or chess champion. We welcome experienced players, members from other chess clubs, beginners who want to improve their game and chess fans who just enjoy playing social or fun chess.

So why not have a break from playing online chess games, moving against fritz or your computer.
Come along to our chess club and play some real over-the-board chess!

See below for more details.

Social Chess

Players of all strengths play social chess in our club events held between May and September. These events can include five minute chess games, consultation games and 20 minute handicap competitions.
More information can be found on the Events page.

League Chess

Between October and April the chess club fields four teams in the Sheffield District Chess Association (in Sheffield divisons two, three, four and the Sheffield 400 league) and one team in the Doncaster District Chess Association.
These teams allow our chess club to compete against other chess clubs.
They provide our members with the chance to challenge opponents of different abilities be they advanced, intermediate or novice players.
You can follow the teams progress using the links provided for each team or via the Home page.
